So I was inspired recently to start a new blog. It’s a New Year, a new season and with an approaching birthday, I’ll soon be another year older. The world is obsessed with youth and beauty. The irony being that billions of pounds are spent on outer beauty whilst the cultivation of inner beauty (which should increase with age as we gain wisdom and have our corners smoothed off) is often much neglected. I was reminded of a piece I wrote last year called “The Power of Beauty”:
She parted the crowds with her beauty,
She could split the very earth with her smile,
As she ran, bare feet thumping incongruously on airport vinyl,
Her warmth melted unplanned seams into the tense throngs that split effortlessly,
Relinquishing bonds in an instant, as ice to water.
I stepped aside like every other and wondered if she was a delicate flower to turn in one’s hands,
Or a thistle loaded with a sting behind the attraction of the bloom.
And in an instant she was gone,
Like a waft of sea air carried on a young and vigorous breeze,
Leaving behind just the faintest suggestion of an invisible, but bewitching, force.
The power of beauty.
